EKU Online Student Sworn in as Chief of Police
EKU student Ryan Schrand was sworn in as chief of police for the City of North College Hill, Ohio on September 8. Schrand, who is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in police studies with EKU Online, is the youngest person to hold the position.
“I believe that my ongoing pursuit of higher education, especially knowledge gained at EKU contributed to my success in the promotional process,” said Schrand. He noted that the agency prefers a bachelor’s degree for promotion and is reviewing the possibility of pay incentives for continued education.
He began his career as a patrol officer in 2005 and moved up the ranks to his current position. “I decided to earn my bachelor’s degree to be competitive as a police executive, not just at my agency, but anywhere my career takes me,” he explained. “Higher education will certainly open doors and help me to highlight all the skills I have acquired through experience and education.”
Schrand says he’s glad he chose the EKU police studies degree. “My experience as an EKU Online student has been wonderful. The classes are challenging, thought provoking and beneficial to my work environment.”
